A Postcard from Tanzania

Today, Saturday 8th March, is International Women’s Day…. and Team Honk are at it again!

Team Honk is about bloggers raising money and awareness for Comic Relief. To celebrate International Women’s Day #iwd2014, Tanya, Annie and Penny are in Tanzania finding out how donations to Sport Relief last year have created female entrepreneurs and #lastingchange for women, their families and communities and beyond rippling out #lastingchange in Africa.

Claudia is an inspirational 54 year old mother and grandmother who, with support from The Gatsby Trust has turned a her hobby of soap making  into a profitable business. A year ago when Claudia  first starting receiving support for TGT she was producing 20 litres of liquid soap a month, selling to friends and family. Now, just one year on Claudia produces 3,000 litres per month, employs two people and she not only sells to friends,  family and local community but also supplies products to hotels and shops. Claudia, like the other women Team Honk have been meeting on their trip, spends time training other women both locally and in further afield…

So how can you help to support women like Claudia grow their businesses?

Team Honking For Sport Relief

Team Honk One

Something amazing has been happening amid the wind and rain. Bloggers, mothers, and families have been coming together across the country to raise money in a gigantic relay race from Lands End to John O’ Groats – 3,000 miles – to raise £20 K for Sports Relief.

The relay began on the 12th January in Lands End, and will finish in John O Groats on the 23rd March 2014. You can find the official route details here.  And it doesn’t come more imaginative in terms of modes of transport; pushchair pushes, roller blading across the Humber, boating round Bristol, #Honkopoly around London, fancy dress, onesies, bikes, scooters, planes, hiking, rafting and mountain climbing.

#teamhonkrelay involves over 200 bloggers, their friends and families in a route that zig zags up the UK taking in 38 regional teams. Read about the Team Honk Story so far; all the low down on Red Nose Day last year. It’s amazing to think it only took the foresight of three bloggers – Tanya, Annie, and Penny (Team Honk) – to start something very special, and show the power of the parent blogging community in raising awareness for such an important cause as Comic Relief; this is the post I published last year, when Team Honk visited Ghana.

So the big question… What is Sports Relief all about?

The first ever Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games take place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd March 2014. The public can join the fun and games by running, swimming or cycling their way to raising cash at over a thousand venues around the country, including the landmark events at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

As one of the biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active raise cash and change lives. The money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to help transform the lives of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people; both at home in the UK, and across the world.
